Round-A-Bout

I started this blog several years ago hoping to journal my journey with RA both for myself as well as to encourage others to not give up. RA as well as many other autoimmune diseases is a tough journey. Finding the right therapy, which is not a one size fits all type of remedy, is a very difficult task. Finding the right medical team is also daunting. Lately, I have spent more time teaching and encouraging my friends to learn about menopause. The ladies of our ancestors did not share much about the menopausal time period of a woman’s life and neither do doctors. We heard of “hot sweats” or “hot flashes” but no one talked about the numerous other symptoms that make life so hard from 40+ years old. A woman goes through so many hormonal changes in her life that it is enough to make your head spin. Throw in an autoimmune disease on top of it and the statistics are staggering of how many go through divorce or even worse, suicide. I love that more celebrities as well as people on social media are talking about menopause.

If you are seeing a medical professional that will not discuss menopause symptoms with you, find another one. I actually transferred my care from one gynecologist to the other one in her office because she discounted everything that I talked to her about. Once women pass child bearing years, we are no longer a money ticket for doctors and are made to feel like our health is easily dismissed. Medical school does not teach a lot about menopause and so doctors don’t know how to treat it. Hormone fluctuations can be addressed and it takes more than a single Estrodiol patch to balance a woman out. Estrodiol patches are transdermal adhesive patches that deliver estrogen through the skin. But women are made up of three hormones, ie estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Neglecting the other two while giving one doesn’t treat the whole person. I opted for Bioidentical Hormone Replace Therapy delivered in pellets once a quarter. Unfortunately it is not FDA approved and not covered by insurance. A lot of women cannot afford this type of therapy that literally gave me my life back. And I find that unfortunate and unfair. I will talk more about my journey finding HRT in another post, but my main point is this. If you are 40+ years old and feel that your body is failing you and your mind has flown out the window, don’t give up! You are probably in perimenopause and need to have your hormones tested. If you have questions, please reach out to me. I may not know all of the answers, but together we can find something to help you.
